About Coughs

Experiencing a cough is normal, but when it becomes recurring and constant, it may be a sign of a larger issue. Chronic coughs that last for more than 2-3 weeks should be seen by a doctor to find the proper treatment for healing.

Coughing is one of your body’s defense mechanisms, working to get rid of irritants or allergens disturbing your throat.

Chronic Cough Symptoms

The main symptom of chronic cough is the duration in which it lasts. Most coughs are considered chronic once they persist for more than 3 weeks. If your cough is accompanied by blood, lack of sleep, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or fever, make an appointment with your doctor.

Causes Of Chronic Coughing

When air passages in the body are triggered, your cough is the reflex that works to remove whatever is irritating your throat or lungs. Coughing can be provoked by a number of different causes.

  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Smoking
  • Sinus infections
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Bronchitis
  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

Although there are many causes of chronic cough, these are some of the main and most effective triggers.

Chronic Cough Treatments

Depending on the severity of your cough, your doctor may prescribe medicine, take x-rays, administer lab tests, and/or do an ear, nose, and throat examination.

Different treatments may include:

  • Decongenstants
  • Cough suppressants
  • Antibiotics
  • Acid blockers
  • Asthma medication

There are also many lifestyle changes that you can implicate such as quitting smoking, drinking lots of water, or using a cool mist humidifier to add moisture to the air while sleeping.
